DIY Wabi Sabi Style Candle Sconces
I’d been searching for the perfect soft, modern, natural feeling sconces to frame this giant living room wall art I hung a couple months ago. I originally thought I’d go with battery bulbs, but I just couldn’t find the right sconce that would work with them, especially since most spherical lights (which I love for this spot) have lamp shades that are really difficult to remove, and battery bulbs would require removing them frequently to charge them.
I also feel like battery bulbs don’t usually have options that get as warm as the lights in the rest of our house, and I really care about having light in the evening being really nice and warm looking. I sort of gave up on the search for a while until I realized one day that I had some wooden spheres from a project I never finished that would be perfect.
I decided to experiment and see if I could put them together into sconces, and I’m so happy with the result! You can watch the video below for more details but here is the basic step by step:
Instructions:
Prep 3 spheres to be held together using 1/4 inch wooden dowels:
Bottom Sphere: Drill 1 just shy of a 1/4 inch hole on the top
Middle Sphere: Drill 2 just shy of a 1/4 inch holes — one on the bottom and one on the top
Top Sphere: Drill 1 just shy of a 1/4 inch hole on the bottom and 1 tiny hole on the top (pilot hole for the screw)
Cover 2 dowels with wood glue and insert them into the wooden spheres to connect them
Drill a tiny pilot hole in the wooden coaster
If the coaster is wider than the spheres, the hole should be off center, so that the back of the coaster lines up with the back of the spheres, to making hanging easier
Screw the coaster to the top of the stack of spheres
Add 2 D Ring hooks to the back using small screws
Hang on the wall!
